Free browser extension for streamers

Blur it before chat sees it.

You react to videos, browse live and buy things on stream. VOD Blur lets you draw a shape over any part of a video or web page and blur it or cover it: burned-in chat, usernames, your address, an order number. It stays exactly where you put it, even in fullscreen.

Free and open source. No account, no tracking, nothing leaves your browser.

My 2026 streaming setup tour

Chat asked for it, so here it is: every piece of gear on my desk, what I would buy again and what I would skip.

Let's start with lighting, because nothing else matters if your camera can't see you.

New message from Mira K.my new address is 7 Sample Road…

Use cases

Anything on your screen ends up on stream.

OBS captures whatever your browser shows. VOD Blur changes what your browser shows, so whatever you blur never reaches the stream or the VOD.

Watching videos and VODs

React content without someone else's stream leaking into yours.

  • Burned-in chat and alerts
  • Usernames, watermarks, handles
  • Spoilers, scores, end-of-video cards

Shopping on stream

Unboxings start at the checkout page. Keep the private bits off camera.

  • Shipping address and phone number
  • Email, order and tracking numbers
  • Last card digits, account names

Browsing live

Reading a forum, checking a dashboard or showing a site with chat.

  • DM sidebars and notifications
  • Recommended feeds and comments
  • Revenue numbers, email addresses
How it works

Draw it once. It comes back on its own.

Click the icon

The VOD Blur button in your toolbar opens a small panel on top of the page.

Draw a shape

Rectangle, ellipse, triangle or freehand. Hold Shift for a perfect square or circle.

Blur or cover

Pick a blur strength, or a solid color. The pipette picks a color straight from the page, so a cover blends right in.

Save

For this one video, a section of the site or the whole site. Next time you open it, the shapes are already there.

Details

Built for the way streams actually look.

Sticks to the video

Shapes are stored relative to the actual video picture, black bars excluded. Theater mode, fullscreen, a resized window: the blur moves with the video.

A color picker that reads the page

Freeze the page and pick a color with a magnifier. Scroll to average 1, 3×3, up to 15×15 pixels, which beats a single noisy pixel from compressed video.

One shortcut to hide them all

Alt + Shift + H shows or hides every shape on the page for a moment, without deleting anything.

Overview per site

See every saved shape, grouped by site, and clean up what you no longer need.

Private by design

No account, no analytics, no servers. Your shapes are stored in your own browser and never leave it.

Open source

MIT licensed and small enough to read in one sitting. Check what it does before you trust it with your stream.

Set it up before you go live. VOD Blur hides things in your browser, so it hides them on your stream too, but only once the shape is there. Draw your shapes off stream, check them in your OBS preview, and remember that a page can change its layout. It's a safety net, not a guarantee.

FAQ

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. VOD Blur is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no paid version.

Which browsers does it work in?

Firefox 142 and newer, today. A Chrome version is built from the same code and is on its way to the Chrome Web Store; it should also work in Edge, Brave and other Chromium browsers once it's there.

Which sites does it work on?

Any normal web page: Twitch, YouTube, Kick, shops, forums, dashboards. Browsers don't let extensions run on their own internal pages (settings, the add-on store), so those can't be blurred.

Does it change the video for anyone else?

No. It only changes what your browser shows. Your viewers see the blur because they're watching your screen; the original video or page is untouched.

Does it work with Netflix and other DRM video?

Blurring and covering work on any video. The color picker can't read DRM-protected video, because the browser shows that as black in screenshots; pick the color by hand there.

What does it store, and where?

Only your shapes and your last-used settings, in your browser's own extension storage. VOD Blur has no server and sends nothing anywhere.

Your next stream, minus the oops.

Install it, draw a shape, save it. Takes about ten seconds.
